As we have said in some of the other articles on this blogsite, the main goal of it is to provide you with the information on Viagra that is going to help you decide whether you wish to start using it. Among different aspects
of this medication that we wish to cover is also the history of the drug. The reason why we decided to include this article is that we thought there might be people who would be interested in learning about how Viagra became such a huge name in pharmacology and what has happened before and after it came out. In the article, you are also going to find out about other aspects of this medication, in a bit more interesting fashion than just by listing the facts.
We should start with the condition itself, the intimidating erectile dysfunction that can severely reduce the quality of life of the men suffering from it. Erectile dysfunction has been around since forever and for the most part of the history, it was a condition that couldn’t be discussed in public. There has always been a certain feeling of shame and embarrassment involved in it. In the last few decades, there has been a definite increase in the number of men suffering from this condition. This has to do with a lifestyle that has become more unhealthy, with more and more men suffering from conditions like diabetes that might contribute to developing ED. Also, the increased amounts of stress that we are exposed to over the last decades has contributed to this increase.
In the past, men who happened to suffer from ED have had very little choice when it came to possible treatments. In fact, they were limited to different natural options whose only problem was that they didn’t do a thing about ED. Sure, their properties were talked about far and wide, but the simple fact is that there is not a single natural ingredient that has been proven to enhance male performance, let alone treat erectile dysfunction. Still, this did not prevent people and companies from developing and manufacturing innumerable products aimed at treating erectile dysfunction.
The revolution started in 1990s when a company called Pfizer started developing a drug for high blood pressure. It was called Sildenafil and in trials they came to a conclusion that it does not reduce the blood pressure as much as they wanted it to. However, they also discovered that it shows a strange property of enabling men who previously had problems with their erections to achieve healthy erections. This changed the course in which the development went to that point and the company started perfecting Sildenafil as the first ED medication.
In 1998, the FDA approved Sildenafil and it was introduced onto the market under the name Viagra. It was a true revolution. Finally, there was a medication, properly developed and manufactured, proven to be efficient and safe for use. It was a true revelation and great news for men who suffered from ED. Finally, a solution that works. Of course, manufacturers of natural products that used to be alone on the market immediately attacked Viagra, causing much debate about safety of the drug and its side effects. Over the years this has not changed at all.
Viagra also introduced a new type of medications on the market, PDE5 inhibitors, a class that will later include Levitra and Cialis. Over the years, these two medications, especially Cialis, have become true competitors to Viagra, but it seems that its reputation as the first and the ultimate ED pill is not something that will go away that easily.
